Dissent

A rare note of internal disagreement in the BBC position on Sir Cliff came yesterday afternoon in the High Court. Current Director of News Fran Unsworth, asked about why the BBC had entered the coverage of the search into the RTS "Scoop of The Year" category in 2015 (it didn't win), said the decision had sent out the wrong signals. Fran was No 2 in News at the time; who can have signed off the entry ?

The witness statement submitted by Head of Newsgathering Jonathan Munro talked about limiting access to the live pictures from the helicopter in case an editor 'inadvertently' transmitted them ahead of the BBC's self-imposed embargo of 1300. The helicopter is shared with ITN, giving both teams access to pictures, regardless of who has commissioned the flight.  No wonder Mr Munro described hiding the live shots as an 'unusual process'.
