Off pitch

It's probably safe to say that the BBC's latest Saturday night risk, groovy choir singing contest Pitch Battle, won't be following it's movie inspiration, Pitch Perfect, into Pitch Battle 2 and 3.

Only 1.69m tuned in last night, 11.3% of the available audience, reduced from a normal Saturday by some good weather.

I think it also simply confuses viewers. Gareth Malone is for mums and their mothers. The American guest judges may be known to BBC commissioners, but are only vaguely familiar to under-30s through their hits from the last century being sampled. Yet the aspiration is all about 'young people' - and choir members are largely too wholesome to make other than sickly telly, whooped up by Mel Giedroyc, whose agent should know better.
