Traditional values

Middle England reach for the remote control at the end of Countryfile last night, to welcome the return of ITV's Vera, watched by an average of 6.48m (29.8% share). Petrolheads stayed loyal to Top Gear, with 2.39m watching at 8pm (10.6%). Only 760k opted for Jeremy Paxman's dyspeptic voyage down the Mersey on Channel 4.

Meanwhile, just 2.53m (12%) were intrigued enough to stay live with the mangled conclusion of SS-GB on BBC1 at 9pm, twisted from Len Deighton's original storyline so that the American blonde lived, in the vain hope of a second series.
