Sorry

"Taking it on the chin" is the title of Lord Pendry's new autobiography. The former MP for Stalybridge and Hythe, and perhaps the best Sports Minister we never had, claims responsibility for setting up Tony Blair for his first crack at Parliament, unsuccessfully contesting Beaconsfield in the 1982 by-election. Blair lost his deposit.

Tom Pendry also endorsed James Purnell to succeed himself at Stalybridge, when James was playing for the Parliamentary football team and working for Blair as an adviser. In the memoir, he says he rather regrets it now.
