Hypothecation

Somebody has briefed Indie Media Editor Ian Burrell that Newsnight's average audience now stands at 579,000 per show. Somebody at Private Eye thinks the Newsnight annual budget is £7m. Presuming (which we shouldn't) that the average audience was made up of the same people each night, then it's costing £12 per viewer per year. Would you knowingly cough up ?

    In the early NN years, viewing figures were so low that one wag suggested it would be cheaper to turn off the transmitters and post the viewer a VHS copy of the show.

    It would be even cheaper with today's technology as a memory card will fit in an envelope - a plotline for W1A, methinks.
